With Thee is the fountain of life

“How precious is Thy lovingkindness, O God!  And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.  They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house; and Thou dost give them to drink of the river of Thy delights.  For with Thee is the fountain of life; in Thee we see light.”  Psalm 36:7-9

There are days when my heart is dull, and I am tempted to stop reaching for You.  I want more and more of Your presence– it’s what I was created for, what my soul longs for, even when I don’t feel it.  In these moments, You send help in the form of another lover of You, to remind me to keep on reaching. To worship–to lift my eyes to You, who is always worthy of my worship, whether I feel exhilarated or not.

So again, I come and declare Your worth, sing Your praises, dance for You, in the posture of great need.  You are worthy, My God, to receive all of my praise, whether I feel Your nearness or not.

In a world that places so much weight on feeling good, I realize that You’ve created me for that– in You.  True pleasure is in Your presence, loving You as you love me back.  Drinking of the river of Your delights.  There is nothing like it and I want more of it.  No earthly pleasure can hold a light the true, lasting pleasure in You.  I have tasted You and want nothing else.

I am so prone to wander and so easily pulled to the things of this world that leave me empty after the momentarily high they offer.  So keep me here, Lord: worshiping You, declaring that in You only is life.

Even if it takes days of coming, again and again, You come.  You always come to me and let me feel Your nearness.  And I’m learning that because in You is the fountain of life, my worship–as unfeeling at times, but full of faith–it’s giving life to my bones.  The more I come, the more You fill, until I am overcome by Your presence– Your life in me, Your nearness.

I must have You and I can’t live without Your presence.  You are my fountain of life–all of my fountains are in You.  Lord, I worship You, who loves to give life to those who call on You in truth.  Fill me, let me feel you nearness, for it is my good.
